Billionaire James Packer has spoken candidly about his failed engagement to Mariah Carey,

The 51-year-old billionaire has spoken candidly about the couple's failed relationship in the new biography The Price Of Fortune: The Untold Story Of Being James Packer.

According to this week's Who magazine, James admitted in the book that the romance was initially 'fun', but he was nonetheless in a dark place mentally.

James explained that his relationship with Mariah was 'fun to begin with', describing his former fiancée as 'insanely bright'.

He added: 'Wherever we went, we were on the top table and that was because of her, not me. She was kind and she took an interest in my life.'

However, the casino mogul - who was later admitted to a rehabilitation centre in March 2018 - confessed he was struggling with his mental health in the midst of their relationship.

In February 2016, just a month after he proposed to Mariah with a $12.7million (USD$10million) 35-carat diamond ring, he was apparently not coping well.

'I was in a bad, bad way,' James said, reflecting on that dark period of his life.
