Avril Lavigne Open Up About Lyme Disease In a New Billboard Interview
And, she dropped quite a few f-bombs in the process.
Back in 2014, the star explained that she was utterly exhausted and couldn't figure out why.
Thanks to cameras following Yolanda Hadid's own struggle with the disease during her stint on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, a friend of the singer suggested she might have the same thing.
Avril, who played at the wedding of Gigi and Bella's mom to music mogul David, called up Yolanda and got some guidance.
The time following her diagnosis was a huge struggle for the Complicated crooner.
'I was in bed for f***ing two years,' she admitted.
'I was like, "I'm going to be brave and tell the world what's going on,'" she said of her decision to come forward.
'And I did it because I was releasing a song for the Special Olympics and I wanted it to do well, so I got forced to sit on camera and talk about it.'
During her sitdown with GMA in 2015, Avril who was ironically interviewed at the time by DailyMailTV host Jesse Palmer, broke down into tears.
'I wasn't ready, and I shouldn't have done it. I was a mess' she admitted.
The singer, who isn't sure how she contracted the illness said she didn't want the disease to take over her life.
'I put on a brave face because I didn't want it to be a part of my identity. So the second I was up, I would take a picture and post it on Instagram and act like my life was f***ing great.'
Avril's long absence from the public was in part because of her physical condition and also her mental state.
'This is me being totally vulnerable with you right now,' she told Billboard. 'I don't want to talk about it. I don't want to relive it. But it's my responsibility.'
As much as the I'm With You singer wanted to shy away from the illnes, it was a particularly difficult night dealing with a medical issue that inspired her latest song.
'I had accepted that I was dying,' she shared. 'And I felt in that moment like I was underwater and drowning, and I was trying to come up to gasp for air. And literally under my breath, I was like, "God, help me keep my head above the water."'
That night she penned the lyrics for her latest single.
Being able to 'be present' to work on her new album is the 'silver lining,' according to Avril of the whole ordeal.
She added: 'This is the first break I've ever taken since I was 15.'
The singer spent time on her latest project with ex-husband, Nikelback frontman Chad Kroeger who produced Head Above Water.
As for her two failed marriages to fellow rockstars, the Sk8er Boi singer says she has no regrets.
'I love love,' she told Billboard. 'The way I looked at it is I married my long-terms.'
Describing both of her ex's as 'good Canadian guys.'
